MJS CATCH UP

After week 2, I fell behind on posting photos from my internship.  Here are some highlights from the last few weeks at the paper.

I went to IndyFest at the Milwaukee Mile and shot racing for the first time.  I'm extremely glad that I was there for the practice the day before to get acclimated to the track.  It was tough to get around in a timely fashion, but it was a lot of fun.

Sebastien Bourdais comes around the first turn during the Verizon IndyCar Series Race on Sunday, July 12, 2015 during Indy Fest.  Bourdais placed first.

Festival goers browse through the merchandise available in the Official Backside Store on the infield during Indy Fest on Sunday, July 12, 2015.

I had another difficult assignment, but in a very different way.  Milwaukee has now surpassed last year's total for homicides and it's only July.  On July 3, Tariq Akbar, 13, was killed after the Fourth of July fireworks in Milwaukee.  I attended the vigil at his home.

Kimberly Smith, 15, hugs her friend, Swanessey Covington-Juarez after the vigil to celebrate the life of Tariq Akbar.  Smith and Covington-Juarez were friends of Akbar.

Arifah Akbar, the mother of Tariq Akbar, listens as community members talk during a vigil for her son on Tuesday, July 7, 2015.

On a lighter note, Miller Park was transformed into a soccer field for one game.

The crew from Bush Turf, a subcontractor hired by Miller Park, begins to transform the baseball diamond into a soccer field on Friday, July 10, 2015.  The first step was to remove the clay surfaces and prepping the ground for the grass.

Walter Kannemann, defender for Club Atlas, slide tackles Papiss Cissé, forward for Newcastle United, during the Newcastle United vs. Club Atlas game at Miller Park on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.

Yoan Gouffran, forward for Newcastle United, heads the ball during the Newcastle United vs. Club Atlas game at Miller Park on Tuesday, July 14, 2015.

Then a piano was on fire...

Ellen Tsaloff and Dan Johnson sit next to the burning piano for a photo on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at the Roxbury Tavern in Sauk City, Wis. The tradition at the tavern started over eight years ago.

Attended a pop-up barbershop...

John Toney, a barber at Uppercuts, gives Charles Cotton a free haircut as a part of Barbershop Mondays on Monday, July 14, 2015.  Damien Smith, a youth organizer for Safe and Sound, leads inter-generational conversation around different topics each week while attendees get their hair cut. This week's topic revolved around family structure.

And then had one of my favorite assignments, where I hiked with two veterans on the Ice Age Trail as a part of Warrior Hikes.

Jenni Heisz and Natalie Koffarnus are two veterans on the Ice Age Trail as a part of the Warrior Hike Program on Thursday, July 16, 2015 in West Bend, Wi. Koffarnus served as a CBRN Specialist in the United States Army in Kuwait and Iraq and Heisz served as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic in the United States Army in Kuwait and Afghanistan.

With Roughly a month of my internship left, it's almost time to say goodbye to the MJS and head back to Athens. Feels like I just started yesterday.
